The Minangkabau are predominantly Islamic, but their social system is still influenced by adat, which is a set of ethnic traditions that originated from animistic beliefs prior to the arrival of Islam.

Pencak silat is an Indonesian national heritage that we must treasure. According to history, these martial arts arrived in this archipelago in the 7th century. Since then, many warriors in Indonesia have their martial arts skills to defeat enemies. With the rising popularity of pencak silat, this martial art has become one of the sports listed in the SEA Games since 1987.

The Gambang Kromong, a traditional musical instrument created by the Betawi community, boasts a fascinating history. As per the book Seni dan Budaya by Harry Sulastianto, it was first brought into the limelight by ethnic Chinese and their descendants during the Dutch colonial era when their numbers in Jakarta began to increase. In order to promote traditional Chinese music, they introduced the Gambang Kromong, which is now owned by two distinct community groups - those of Chinese origin and the Betawi residents.
